mud australia

Mud Australia is a porcelain manufacturer based in Sydney, Australia, that was started by Shelley Simpson in 1994. Mud Australia design and handmake a porcelain collection for everyday use around the world.

As a small business, Mud Australia strongly believe in the global values of craft, community and sustainability.

Mud Australia design and hand-make beautifully simple, yet deceptively intricate porcelain homewares for everyday household use. Their collections are designed to emphasise the durability and finesse of the material, rather than letting the design take over.

Each piece is fashioned from an indistinguishable chunk to become a fine piece of art by a pair of skilled hands in Mud Australia’s studio.

The products come in a range of exciting colours and styles, with new shapes and hues added seasonally.

How is it made?
Their porcelain range is handmade in their factory by a staff of professional and amateur ceramicists. Each piece is designed to last and manufactured using the best materials available. The pigment is tinted in the porcelain at the slip stage to provide colour depth. Clear glaze is then applied to the interior of each piece, leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling and use. The end result is a product to fetishise, that perfectly combines a minimalist aesthetic with a clearly handmade finish, while providing a soulful alternative to mass produced and highly manufactured ceramic design. The end result is a piece that combines a minimalist aesthetic with a clearly handmade finish. Each piece is microwave, dishwasher and oven friendly – truly made for everyday use in the modern household.

How are they used?
All pieces are oven, microwave, dishwasher and food safe, making them ideal for domestic and commercial use at the table and in the kitchen. All glazes and porcelain bodies are non toxic.

I think Mud capture their buyers through their unique blend of colour, materials, process and of course design.
