Copper Lighting

Design Sponge is a design blog run by Brooklyn-based writer- Grace Bonney. The site updates 6-8 times a day and attracts a diverse group of readers all around the world.
Since I am attracted to all things design, and in turn consider myself a 'design sponge', I love hunting through Bonney's blog for all sorts of ideas. See here website here.

This morning I found a DIY for making a coffee table with copper legs on Design Sponge. Although a strange thought, this DIY means more to me than it probably should! I'll tell you why...

My final work for university was a series of lights. The main materials used in my lights were wood, sandstone and COPPER! I loved working with copper, although I might have given you a different response at the time. I find such value in a material which is intended to be hidden. Copper is what is used for a lot of electrical, roofing and plumbing work in the construction industry. But I found a different purpose for it.

I found interest in using an industrial material for a function and aesthetic purpose.

Here are some images of my designs...

I believe these to be good stating points, a nice introduction into the design of lighting. Scroll down to the bottom to see the direction in which my thoughts and designs are heading.

This final light is my least favourite, however it was the starting point for my designs and therefore I owe it something! One thing I did learn is that it is hard to be a perfectionist when using copper. Copper reacts to heat, so everyone it comes in contact with fingers the marks stay forever. Unless, you are half mad like myself and take to it madly with copper cleaner and a cloth for hours on end. Don't worry, the final product is always worth it!

I am starting to further my lighting designs.

  2. Hi there! Thank you for reading my blog!
This is an image by photographer and interior designer Benedikte Ugland, she has not mentioned where the lights are from specifically but I do know you can find quite a good selection of similar lights on ebay! They are very popular at the moment.

Here is what Benedikte said; "The lighting with cords wrapped around a rod was commissioned by a blacksmith."

I'm sorry I cannot be more helpful!
